Roadblock by Naam Tamilar Katchi members demanding closure of liquor shop in Eraniel: 139 people arrested
In Nagercoil, police arrested 139 members of the Naam Tamilar Katchi for staging a protest and road blockade demanding the closure of a TASMAC liquor shop located at the Eraniel junction. A private bar was functioning alongside this shop, and despite a Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court order to stop the bar's operations, the shop continued to function. The Naam Tamilar Katchi had previously held two protests regarding this issue.
Yesterday afternoon, when the shop opened, party members launched a siege protest. Despite police barricades, they pushed through and locked the liquor shop. This led to a confrontation between the police and the cadres. Following this, the members sat on the road in protest. The protest was led by State Women's Wing Secretary Ancy Shoba Rani and attended by several officials including Maria Jennifer, Deepaksalamon, and others. The police detained the 139 protesters and took them to a local wedding hall. The shop was later reopened for business after their removal.
