People of Amaravathi Vilai Affected by Marungoor TASMAC Shop
State Women's Wing Coordinator Maria Jennifer and Parish Priest Christuraj addressed a protest demanding the closure of the TASMAC liquor shop in Marungoor. They stated that TASMAC was originally created in 1983 to control illicit liquor deaths and price hikes, but now the government itself has become a seller. The protesters pointed out that according to 2003 regulations, a liquor shop should not be within 50 meters of a place of worship in a town panchayat, but this shop is located just 30 meters from a Hindu temple. Furthermore, the shop is situated on a narrow 15-foot road used by school girls and women in Amaravathi Vilai, causing significant hardship and safety concerns. Despite rain, protesters held banners and raised slogans. They criticized the heavy police presence, questioning if the police were there to protect the public or the liquor shop. They vowed to continue their struggle through legal means and protests until the shop is relocated.
