NTK Road Blockade Demanding Closure of TASMAC Shop in Eraniel: 139 People Including 33 Women Arrested

A TASMAC liquor shop has been operating near Eraniel Junction in Nagercoil. Previously, a private bar attached to the shop was ordered to close by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court following protests by the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK). Despite the bar closure, NTK continued to demand the total closure of the liquor shop itself.

On the 2nd of the month, the party announced a protest to lock the shop at 12:00 PM. Police security was heightened at the location. During the protest, over a hundred NTK members arrived via Thumbavilai Amman Temple road and attempted to pull down the shop's shutters. Employees inside locked the shop from within before the protesters could reach. The protesters then blocked the road, causing a traffic disruption. Led by state women's wing secretary Anshi Shoba Rani, women's wing secretary Maria Jennifer, and state propaganda secretary Seelan, the crowd raised slogans. Eraniel police arrested 139 participants (106 men and 33 women) and detained them at a marriage hall in Neyyoor. The shop was later reopened under police protection, and cases have been filed against the protesters.
