NTK Condemns Tamil Nadu Government Over Sprouting Paddy Grains
Nagercoil: Mariah Jennifer, the state coordinator of the Naam Tamilar Katchi Women's Wing, issued a statement criticizing the Tamil Nadu government. She stated that due to delays in the government's procurement of paddy from farmers across the state, the grains have begun to sprout and are going to waste, causing significant losses to farmers. In Kanyakumari district alone, there are 37,000 acres of agricultural land, yet there are only 10 procurement centers. Furthermore, none of these centers have grain-drying equipment. If moisture content exceeds 17 percent, procurement centers refuse to accept the paddy. This forces farmers to turn to private procurement centers where they must accept prices fixed by private entities, often leading to sales below cost. Jennifer accused the 'Dravidian Model' government of neglecting local farmers and questioned if there is a conspiracy to destroy Tamil Nadu's paddy production in favor of importing rice from Andhra Pradesh. She urged the government to modernize procurement centers and listen to the demands of the farming community.
