Naam Tamilar Katchi Road Blockade Protest Demanding Closure of TASMAC Shop: 146 People Including 37 Women Arrested
In Eraniel, Kanyakumari district, a TASMAC liquor shop has been operating near the junction. Following a High Court order to stop the bar operations attached to the shop, members of the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) had been demanding the total closure of the shop itself. Despite two previous protests, the shop remained open. On Monday, NTK members gathered in front of the shop. When employees opened the outlet under police protection, the protesters blocked the road and attempted to pull police barricades onto the street. This led to a tense standoff. Led by district and state-level coordinators, the protesters were eventually arrested by police under the leadership of Inspector Jayalakshmi. A total of 146 people, including 37 women, were detained and kept in a private wedding hall. The protest caused a one-hour traffic snarl, forcing vehicles to be diverted.
