Naam Tamilar Katchi members stage road blockade demanding closure of liquor shop: 139 arrested

In Thingalnagar, Eraniel, members of the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) gathered to demand the permanent closure of a TASMAC liquor shop located at the Eraniel junction. Although a bar attached to the shop was closed following a court order, the party demanded the entire shop be shut down. Despite a heavy police presence and the shop opening at noon under protection, over a hundred NTK members arrived via alternative routes, bypassed security, and threw police barricades onto the road to block traffic. Led by state women's wing officials, the protesters raised slogans against the Tamil Nadu government and district administration. Consequently, the police arrested 139 people (106 men and 33 women) and detained them in a marriage hall. Following the arrests, liquor sales resumed at the shop. The protest caused a traffic disruption in the area for approximately one hour.
