Marungur TASMAC Shop Removed: Victory for AIADMK and NTK Legal Struggles
Nagercoil, Feb 21: Residents of Marungur are celebrating the removal of a TASMAC liquor shop following a successful legal and field struggle led by the AIADMK and Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK). The shop was located on the main road connecting Marungur to Amaravathivilai in Kanyakumari district. The presence of the shop caused significant distress to the public, particularly women and school/college students, due to the behavior of drunkards.
In response, AIADMK led by Thalavai Sundaram MLA initiated protests on November 17 last year, including daily demonstrations, signature campaigns, and candle-light vigils. Simultaneously, the Marungur Town Panchayat, led by Chairperson Lakshmi Srinivasan, passed a resolution demanding the shop's closure.
Parallelly, the NTK women's wing coordinator Maria Jenifer led several protests even in heavy rain. Both parties filed independent cases in the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Following the court's directive to the district administration and TASMAC management, the shop (No. 4740) was permanently closed yesterday. Local residents and party members expressed great joy over this outcome.
