High Court Orders Restoring Suchindram Temple Tank to its Original Heritage State Before Chithirai Festival

Nagercoil, Feb 1: The High Court has issued an order in a case filed by the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) to renovate the Suchindram Temple tank to its original heritage state before the upcoming Chithirai festival. Maria Jennifer, the State Women's Wing Coordinator of NTK, stated that the party intervened after ancient stone walls collapsed due to faulty and irregular renovation work at the Suchindram Thanumalayan Temple tank. A lawsuit was filed through advocate Kilitus on behalf of Agastheeswaram North District Treasurer Karthi, demanding action against responsible officials and contractors. The Madurai Bench of the High Court, comprising Justices G. Jayachandran and K.K. Ramakrishnan, had previously ordered an inquiry on November 18, 2025. Following reports that structural engineers were not consulted before the stone walls were dismantled, the district administration informed the court on November 21, 2025, that the contractor's license was cancelled. The court has now condemned the administrative failures and ordered the formation of an expert committee including archaeologists and engineers to ensure the tank is restored to its 14th-century architectural state before the festival.
